This summer festival is the biggest holiday, yes holiday, in Anguilla. Everything is closed even
grocery stores. The showstopper of Anguilla Carnival is August Monday, its namesake given that this event always without a doubt takes place on the first Monday in August. It’s a full day of bacchanal.
Early morning partying never hurt anybody, J’ouvert starts August Monday as only J’ouvert can. It is waking up at 5 am and acting with wild abandon, leave your worries at home there’s no room for them because everyone is welcome. More than 6,000 people are ready to rise and shine, jiggle and whine till the sun sets. Musical competitions also take place during Anguilla’s carnival season like the Calypso Monarch – dozens of bands armed with melodic voices, sharp lyrics, and steel drums compete for top prize. After selecting a new Carnival Queen things come to a climax with the finale of Anguilla’s carnival. The Grand Parade of Troupes also brings out many people eager for the carnival celebrations to continue. The parade is filled with costumed dancers as well as plain clothes dancers excited to be part of the atmosphere. It’s a cornucopia of colors, flamboyance, dancing, joy, and skill on display. It makes sense why this is Anguilla’s biggest holiday.
