Carnival fever is alive and contagious in French Guiana. Kourou Carnival stems from Creole tradtion and celebrates the cultural and ethnic diversity of French Guiana. Kourou Carnival embodies a sensual energy quite unique compared to others. The most famous character of Kourou Carnival are the Queens of Carnival called “Touloulous”. Touloulous are fitted in a mime of 19 th century women’s ware and disguised by masquerade masks, only their piercing eyes visible. These women entice awaiting men to dance. The parade comes after months of preparation. Bedazzled themed costumes and floats take to Kourou’s streets. Drum and brass musicians demonstrate their skill and talent making pulsating rhythms for costumed masqueraders to dance to.
