Mashramani derives from the Amerindian word Mashirimehi meaning a great celebration after
a communal effort takes place. Guyana, building a new republic after being emancipated felt Mashramani represented their country’s new outlook. Mashramani is a carnival like celebration, however it observes Guyana’s anniversary of being a republic. Because of this thousands of people journey to the streets set on seeing or being part of the Mash Festival. Various aspects of Guyanese culture are depicted. Musical competitions in the genres of chutney, soca, and calypso are held. Celebrations of art are also featured like poetry competitions. The street parade in conjunction with the children activities, competitions and contests boldly showcases the talent, pride, love of Guyana and its people.
