MONTSERRAT CARNIVAL

Montserrat’s Jump-up Day commemorates the emancipation of the enslaved Africans. This tiny
Caribbean island boasts great parties and a contagious energy. Jump-up Day is the last day of Montserrat Carnival. The Jump-up Day is modeled after Trinidad & Tobago carnival however, Montserrat maintains its own identity. Because the festivities center around Christmas – a very important holiday event in Montserrat also – Jump-Day is a culmination of all that is worth celebrating. The passing Christmas, the New Year, and the emancipation. On Jump-up Day the symbol of slavery is portrayed as masqueraders weighed down by chains walk the parade route and sometimes go to locals homes – as the procession passes through neighborhood streets – they are met with small treats on occasion. Jump-up Day ends festivities in Montserrat honoring history, culture, and love.
