Preparation begins well in advance for the Bonair Grand Karnaval Parade. In celebration of
Lent’s approach Bonaire bursts alive with color, music, and dance. Rincon and Kralendijik are
the places to be in Bonaire if you want to experience Karnaval. The kids and adults have their days of play and the spectators get a healthy serving of both to satisfy their carnival itch. Kiddies carnival see just as much color, showmanship and care free behavior as the adult parade – just on a smaller scale. Everyone comes out on Kralendijik’s road to celebrate. Beauty pageant winners’ wave and smile from floats, purple and red cloaked dancers wear gold gilded masks on sticks, and warrior themed men show off their strength and pride leading a procession of colorful floats. To close the celebration the people act out an old tradition. The burning of King Momo. Before this is done the parade route is retraced – yes all the music and revelry happens again. The King Momo is set ablaze. Momo’s burning signifies the erasure of all that cannot pass with us into Lent.
