Carnaval de Badajoz | SPAIN

It is a tradition so revered that Badajoz Carnival was given the distinction of being named a
Festivity of National Tourist Interest. The vibrant smiles, music, and artistry of Badajoz Carnival
attract hordes of carnival goers to this city in Western Spain. Badajoz’s citizens take carnival
quite seriously. Throughout the year artists and workers sketch, design, and craft the varied and
eclectic selection of costumes for the performers to wear. Each comparsas or music troupe dons a costume unique to their group and theme. Some may be dressed as odd characters, flamenco dancers, or even the traditional wear of a foreign nation. The comparsas in their unique outfits march and stroll the streets while providing music for the colorful procession with their instruments of choice. Elaborate skirts, winded capes, and neon wigs make Badajoz Carnival a sight to see, as well as the elaborate floats skillfully crafted by dedicated artisans. The closing of the festivities is marked with the Burial of the Sardine, one last joyful musical procession that takes place to honor the end of the carnival season. Be sure to see Badajoz Carnival and all it has to offer before the city of Badajoz takes that final stroll with the sardine to its burial ground!
