Carnaval de Ovar | PORTUGAL

Ovar Carnaval blends local tradition with the influence of Rio Carnival practices. The result is an uninhibited, demolition of societal barriers. Ovar Carnival began on a wild note, it came to be known as “Caranval sujo,” dirty carnival. In the 1950s revelers after feasting would bombard one another with flour, dirt, powders and any type of liquid they could get hold of. The aftermath of these dirty celebrations led to the suppression of this event. Ovar Carnival then evolved into an organized parade of extravagant floats, beaded and beautiful dancers in similar fashion to Rio Carnival. Samba schools emerged bringing with it this famously intoxicating music and dance. Of course with samba there is also the scandalizing bejeweled costumes of the dancers. On Domingo Gordo, Fat Sunday and Terça-feira Gorda, Fat Tuesday dancers, floats, and samba take to Ovar’s streets in a Rio style carnival parade. If you’re looking for some traditional Portuguese presence, look no further than “Noite Mágica”. The spirit of dirty carnival lives during “Noite Mágica” or Magic Night. It is on this Monday evening where revelers dress in anything imaginable. It’s a spontaneous night of food, drinks, music all encompassed in the parade. There’s an air of mystery surrounding Magic Night, you never know who’s under those disguises. Unless you go to find out yourself.
