An internationally known festival. One of the oldest celebrated in Italy. As well as a great influencer to many of the carnivals featured on this site. The Carnival of Venice dates backs as early as the 14 th century. Its means of establishment was simple: to promote fun and “merrymaking”. With the added aid of masking ones identity, the mysterious air of the Carnival allowed all participants the freedom and gift of inhibition and pleasure. With masks gentry could not be distinguished from peasantry, there was no social class. It is a celebrated event that attracts millions of people a year so they can personally experience the elaborate Venetian masks Venice is so famed for. An event called, la maschera piu bella, or the most beautiful mask tasks place in accordance with the carnival. The winner is determined by a panel of international costume and fashion designers. The Venetians take their masks very seriously. As they should, it is an art of form as well as an integral part of Carnival. Along with the masks the long is completed with capes, shrouds, or gowns reminiscent of a regal moment in Venice’s history. The Carnival of Venice has inspired many carnival events around the world with a Catholic history. It is the original and most extravagant carnival!
