St. Croix amps up the party vibes for a one month celebration. The Crucian Christmas Carnival tradition dates back to the 1800s, however the carnival was inaugurated in the 1950s. The month is full of parties, festivals, concerts and the like. Competitions like Calypso Monarch, a music scene and carnival Queen, Prince, and Princess are quite popular. As is the J’ouvert – the dirty mas celebrations where there is great revelry as in traditional pretty mas (when everyone is decked in their costumes). The Children’s Mas is a great taste of local tradition and heritage being passed onto the next generation. Though were really all here for the adult parade. Dance groups are a staple at the Christmas Carnival – vibrant colorful garb mixed with pageant like grace and a Caribbean rhythm.
