Taking place along Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast, Limon carnival captures the beauty of an unknown culture of Costa Rica. Limon Carnival celebrates the African-Caribbean ancestry and heritage present in Costa Rica. The festival was originally established in 1949 in remembrance of Christopher Columbus arrival to Costa Rica at Port Limon. Spectators flock to Limon as masqueraders don colorful feathered collars, beaded belts, and royal headpieces. Some of the costumes explore the traditional Latin heritage of Costa Rica while others lean more towards modern bikini fare. Along with the masqueraders, hand made floats also fill the streets. Local food is also a must try, like marinated fish, pig tail, sweet bread, and ale.
