Palo de Mayo or Maypole is an annual festival that occurs each May in Nicaragua. The festival originated amongst the Afro-Caribbean people in Nicaragua, where each May an assembly of women gather to invite May’s rainy season as well as celebrate new life. In preparation of carnival the neighborhoods along the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua come together to prepare the colorful costumes and dance routines to be on display during Palo de Mayo. Live percussion, vigorous hip dancing, and happy people is a given. The Palo de Mayo experience is a cherished tradition that has been occurring for generations. Near the conclusion of the carnival the participants come together to perform the traditional Tulululu dance. It displays the unity of the various ethnic groups present along the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. In the dance people form an arc with their hands over their heads and dancers pass through this arc of unity.
