Turks & Caicos Grand Junkanoo

The last day in December and New Year’s Day converge into one long jubilant occasion. Celebrated since the 16th century the festival originated from the joyous days of rest around. Christmas the enslaved Africans were given and utilized to their fullest. Popular music forms Junkanoo, Ricksaw, and Combina pump and permeate Turks & Caicos tropical air. The costumes of the past have been modernized yet still resemble and honor the history of Mas and Junkanoo in Turks & Caicos. Different bands color the streets there are musical bands. Dressed alike in broad shoulder pieces and feather headpieces one group brings the noise in the form of a small air instrument. Other bands wear a more simple attire wanting spectator to focus only on the handmade goatskin drums they beat along Junkanoo’s parade. Floats take up space on the street and causes much awe from the audience.
