Uruguay Carnival

Much of the action that occurs during Uruguay’s Carnival takes place in the capital, Montevideo. This hidden carnival treasure is local fare so it is not overripe with tourists and inflated prices. What makes Uruguay’s carnival unique is the rich tradition that has been celebrated for generations. Two traditional events bring out the locals: the murgas and the llamadas. The murga is a street performance that incorporates satirical elements and comedy flair and usually covers Uruguayan culture, society, and politics. While the llamadas, or the calls is a nother great feature of Uruguay Carnival. These are drum parades with dancers, known as comparsas they take to the streets in competition to win the best group from drumming and choreography.
