The Spicemas Carnival is Grenada’s most vibrant festival. There is plenty of musical performances, delectable food, and events to take in during Grenada’s carnival season. Memorable events include J’ouvert, steel drum competitions, and the competition between the most extravagant costumes – the King and Queen of Carnival. These festivities are familiar to many carnival celebrations based in the West Indies. What is unique about Spicemas Carnival is the deliberate blend of traditional and modern pageantry during the parade display of costumes. Masqueraders can choose to play in what is called Short Knee Mas. Costumes designed in the tradition of Short Knee Mas reflect the traditional and modest origins of carnival while shedding a spotlight on Grenada’s culture. There is an option for a modern look, what is usually seen today on masqueraders. The evolution of carnival if you will – decorated, studded, bejeweled bikinis and complimentary feathered arms or legs pieces to complete the look. Go traditional or modern, the choice is yours either way it’ll still be a good time.
