Ogwashi-Ukwu means “Palace of the great King” these are Igbo speaking people in the Delta area of Nigeria and are mainly farmers. The Ogwashi-Ukwu Carnival was created to sustain the culture of the Ogwashi-Ukwu people. Dance troupes and several floats make of the parade’s procession. Each group shows off their costume some relate to cultural garments and tradition, dance is also a big part of the celebration. The Olobo dance is a traditional dance kept alive because of Ogwashi Carnival. The dance features men dressed in bright garments with a color belt of hanging confetti like strings they wear strong masks that cover the entirety of their faces and with cane strips in hand the performing floggings. It demonstrates strength and resilience – many watch this dance unfold old, young, locals, foreigners. This carnival celebration is all about celebrating and keeping alive the culture of the Ogwashi-Ukwu people.
